The battery technology on Android phones has come a long way over the years and most flagship phones can quite happily make it through the day before needing a recharge. But that doesn’t mean your battery life is as long on your Android phone as you want. Certain apps are like real battery hogs — they will use up precious juice in the background if you aren’t actively using them. In this post, we cover the reasons some apps are sure as hell draining your Android battery, how to identify them, and tips to leave them behind.
Why Apps Drain Battery?
There are a few key reasons why certain Android apps are more battery-hungry:
- If Battery Life is short then things like Location Services (which use GPS to track your location, or are bolstered by it being active) will use more battery. Many social media apps, and maps/navigation and weather apps make use of location services.
- Apps that constantly check in with a server, such as email or other messaging apps social media or other sharing apps, or apps that sync your data constantly — email, messaging, social media apps, sharing apps, etc. — will continuously chew through your battery.
- Battery Usage – Especially Video, Graphics, or complex and complex animations will consume battery. So most of the video streaming apps, games, and video calling apps, are display intensive.
- Apps can still be using system resources andbatteries while you aren’t using them and these can be called Background Processes. It’s usually poorly ddesigned-appsas the culprit.
Step 1: Find Battery Draining Apps
The first thing to decide is which apps are using the most battery.
- View battery usage over the last 24 hours in Settings followed by battery.
- Battery usage percentage of the apps is listed from highest to lowest. Notice in the background any apps using a lot of batter.
- To see detailed usage stats, tap on the app. See the length of the app’s foreground time vs. the length of background time.
- Tips on taking note of the biggest battery-draining offenders (mainly those with high background usage). In the next steps, you’ll optimize these apps.
Step 2: Turn Off Background battery usage
Background Apps that send notifications, or refresh and sync data can eat a ton of battery. You can restrict background usage for these apps:
- From the Battery screen go back and press the menu icon (3 vertical dots).
- In case your Android version is older, tap “Battery optimization” and older, tap “Background restriction”.
- To adjust the app, tap it, and choose “Restrict,” “Optimized” or “Unrestricted” according to your taste. (There are only two options for some phones).
- Nearly all background activity is blocked by restriction.
- Some background activity is optimized based on your usage of the app. For most of our apps, this is going to be the best choice.
- Permits that are complete in the background but unrestricted will drain more battery.
Change it for other apps that look that highlight background usage (as in your battery stats). VA is a very simple gra eat wgrazezeve the battery life of thedethe these theey restricting background activity.
Step 3: Adjust Location Settings
GPS and location services are by far the biggest culprits for battery drain on the Android platform.
- It would be best if you went to Settings then Location.
- Go to toggle location services off completely, or go to “App permission” and review the list of apps and toggle some off.
- Also be sure to toggle OFF Wi-Fi/Bluetooth scanning since these use location anyway, even in the background.
